One of the reasons why I started this website is to start to live more environmentally friendly. I simply want to make my environmental footprint as small as possible.
I guess you are already thinking: “Well, he isn’t exactly changing the world by buying a bamboo toothbrush.” And you are right. But it is definitely a step in the right direction. Changing the small things is something that does not cost much (literally) and does not give any discomfort in any way. You can read some numbers about how environmentally unfriendly plastic toothbrushes really are. They might surprise you.

Bamboo toothbrush: my review
Note that this is my own opinion and that this article is in no way sponsored. It would be cool to have a dedicated sponsor giving me loads of bamboo toothbrushes…but unfortunately. I don’t have that.
Where can you buy an eco-friendly bamboo toothbrush online?
In my opinion, there are two options. And I have tried them both:
What are the best bamboo toothbrushes on Amazon?
As there seems to be a million different options on Amazon, I cannot tell you exactly which one that might be the best. However, I can tell you about the two that I have tried (and can therefore recommend):
#1: Wowe Lifestyle.
This is probably my favorite among all bamboo toothbrushes. It does not give you that stale “woody” feeling, they are quite affordable and they look good. I have no idea how they can make their bamboo product so soft, but I guess there is some advanced technology involved that I simply can’t explain. 🙂
#2: Vaireo Bamboo Toothbrush.
As I also wanted to try something more expensive, I bought toothbrushes from a brand called Vaireo. They are slightly more expensive compared to Wowe, but I will not say that the price difference made up for the quality difference. In other words: both of these brands are equally good in my opinion. However, it’s always more eco-friendly to buy in bulk when you purchase something online. Vaireo = 6 pack. Wowe = 4 pack. You do the math! 🙂
What’s up with Woodzee?
Woodzee.com is probably the best and most convenient online store to buy them. I did read several reviews of their product about a couple of months ago. Then I decided to ship a couple of toothbrushes to my friend that lived in USA – and he was quite happy with the product. *
*= PS! Please note that they do not have international shipping. This is only an option for people living in The United States.
You simply have to go to their website and type in “toothbrush” in the search field. It will lead you to this product category:
PS! They do offer free shipping and free return to all US customers.
Where did I buy my toothbrush?
Actually I bought this bamboo toothbrush when I was living in China on the infamous website Taobao (Owned by Alibaba). In other words, the chances of you finding the exact same product where you live is very small…but I will link towards a couple of great toothbruses I found on Amazon in the end of the article.
This is how it was presented on the website:
Some of my friends actually pointed out that it was “rainbow colored” and therefore a part of the #Pride movement. I do not know, but if I have supported such a case: great stuff!
As I also mentioned to them: “This toothbrush seems to be inclusive in so many ways!” 🙂
So this is how it actually looks like:
Pretty cool design. If you visit someone’s house and they got a bamboo toothbrush in their bathroom, it looks pretty damn cool. That is my honest opinion. But being pretty is one thing. Functionality is a very different thing.
In terms of design, I would probably be willing to give it a good 9/10.
How does it feel? Does it clean my mouth better than a “normal” toothbrush? And so on.
Well. It does feel very good.
I have to say that some of the plastic toothbrushes I had in the past were pretty good in cleaning the wisdom teeth. This is due to the fact that plastic is a very handy material to “bend”. So I was a bit scared of not being able to clean the teeth that was hidden all behind in my mouth, but that was not a problem at all.
Another thing is the feeling of having bamboo versus plastic in your mouth. It feels cleaner and more comfortable. Not to become too hipster, but it almost feels like you are “united with nature”.
I will not lie. The plastic type is very often much cheaper than the bamboo option. But I will try analyze the duration time of a plastic vs a bamboo one and see if the long-term cost can turn out to be pretty similar. Needless to say, plastic is a very simple and cheap material to produce. That is why most of the companies in the world tend to make “everything” in plastic.
So if you want to “invest” in the bamboo version, you will have to pay about double price – at least.
I paid 21 RMB for mine, which equals 3 USD.
Why are bamboo toothbrushes better for the environment?
Short answer: because the alternative is plastic.
Longer answer: In US alone, about 900 million toothbrushes end up as trash every year. About 99 % of these contain plastic. And almost 100 % of them contain some sort of material that is not biodegradable. These numbers are only coming from USA. Imagine if you add numbers from China, Europe, India, Russia, Africa and so on….
It is rather scary. You might look at the small toothbrush in your bathroom and think: “does it really make a difference if I replace this with something made of bamboo?”. And the answer is that, yes, it does matter.
There are loads of cool bamboo toothbrushes on Amazon. Do not only buy one for yourself – buy one for your friend, your family or some colleague. It is a great reminder to people that doing small efforts in your daily life is actually something that will create a more sustainable future for our planet.
Find your own bamboo toothbrush on Amazon
“The everything store” is the slogan of Amazon. And yes – they are right. They do have (almost) every (legal) product in the world.
Also a pretty wide range of different bamboo toothbrushes. This is a small collage of products that I found interesting:
Pretty good. With international shipping, you can make sure that you have the product in hand after just a couple of weeks. As you can see, most of the toothbrushes on Amazon comes in 4, 6 or 8 pack, which is handy. I almost felt bad for buying my own as it was a “one pack” and therefore the environmental cost of shipping it from Guangzhou in South to Shanghai would be bigger than what we earned from not using plastic.
However, I hope that I can still be able to convince a lot of you guys to invest in a bamboo toothbrush and therefore “make up for” that environmental cost. 🙂
…and remember that these small contributions also is a part of saving the world. Thumbs up for anyone that replaces their plastic with bamboo.
The real review: plastic versus bamboo toothbrush
One thing is to buy a bamboo toothbrush and say that it is “good”. Another thing is to measure it against its number 1 competitor: the plastic toothbrush. So I got a toothbrush from my friend (a brand new one….) and brushed my teeth in the morning with the plastic one and in the evening with my bamboo toothbrush.
This is what I found out:
First of all, I want to say that the plastic version is better to brush the wisdom teeth. Plastic is a softer material than bamboo, which makes it able to bend. Secondly, the grip is much more comfortable on the bamboo toothbrush. Brushing harder is much easier as well as brushing hard over a long period of time.
Apart from that, I did not find any differences that are worth mentioning. The fact that bamboo is more environmentally friendly than plastic is something that should make you replace your current toothbrush. But I am not going to pretend that the differences are bigger than what they really are.
